Outings...

Scotland:

Where in the UK could be more romantic? Towering mountains, deep glens, spiky fairytale castles, raging torrents full of fish, empty streches of golden sand, oodles of culture & wonderful food (but don't mention midges)- Scotland has so much going for it, but I need up-to-date information! Please let me know of any free or good value outings you find...

In the meantime, here's the list so far...

  •     Edinburgh: as recommended by Linda Empson (UK Frugal Living) - Chambers Street Museum (Chambers Street - can't miss it - its huge!) Really for older kids but my 4 year old loves all the stuffed animals and the real goldfish in the two ponds - good for at least a couple of hours and its FREE!

  •     The Museum of Childhood - halfway down the Royal Mile - history of toys with loads of hands-on things for the kids - again FREE!!

  •     Glasgow - the Hunterian Museum - interesting collections...

  •     Coatbridge - Summerlee Heritage Museum - recommended by Wendy Beattie - this is free and has a mine you can go down, exhibitions of all sorts, like toys from way back when, clothes from wartime, cottages that are made up to look like different eras eg 1920's 1960's etc, the only things that you pay for are the cafe and shop and also there is a tram ride which is the princely sum of 35p! There's also great play areas and lots of room to run about - tires them out!!

  •     East Kilbride - the Museum of Scottish Country Life which as you probably guessed is about farming and you get tractor rides and stuff, this is free for all under18's so doesn't work out too expensive

Check out these sites for more advice :-

Travel Scotland - has a very good guide to the top 20 free attractions!

Edinburgh - Good guide to the sights.

Official WWW guide to Edinburgh - from Heriot Watt University.

GlasgowGuide.Co.Uk - excellent guide to things to do in & around Glasgow.

The Hunterian Museum - looks like a lovely day out...
